A fascinating article about Adam Goldberg and the Social Network he created: CU Community (it started at Colombia University).
He launched a few months before The Facebook at Harvard, with huge, instant uptake: “Goldberg says that most Columbia students signed up in just over a month” and expanded successfully to other colleges.
The product was arguably better than facebook at the time. CU Community allowed:
- blogging
- photo sharing
- cross profile comments
All this at a time when The Facebook was a basic student directory on which you could “friend” and “poke” people but not much else.
Needless to say, after some fierce competition in 2004, Facebook outplayed CU Community and only one could survive.
